Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble: Chem does Halloween at NU
By Annie Cebulski Students gathered last Friday in Tech to watch as chemistry professor Eberhard Zwergel--whose first name translates roughly to "heart of boar"--performed mad scientist-esque experiments in his annual Halloween show, packing the auditorium for all three showtimes that day. Dazzling lights and explosions filled the room before students' eyes as Zwergel and his assistants mixed chemicals, the Northwestern University Marching Band providing the driving rhythm to keep things moving. But the spectacle, although mostly entertainment with limited explanation, served a bigger purpose for Zwergel: to inspire students to see chemistry in a different light. Watch the video below to see some the experiments and hear Professor Zwergel talk about why he thinks chemistry goes beyond the equations.
