"I’m retired now, but I used to work as a guide up in Alaska. My knees just can’t handle that kind of work anymore. When my kids get old enough, though, I take each one up here for a night camping on the snow. It’s hard to define what people who don’t get outside are missing out on. It’s definitely not for everyone, and I don’t tell my kids they have to love it like I do. But there are lessons up here about persistence, planning, respecting the mountains but also pushing yourself. When you finally get to where you are going there is a feeling that you really tested yourself and accomplished something."
