KNOW A LITTLE BIT ABOUT "KNOW TOMORROW": AN IN OUR NATURE PREVIEW

By Avery Goods On Friday, 60 campuses across the country will be hosting events for a national day of action called "Know Tomorrow." The Know Tomorrow campaign seeks to educate millennials on climate change and what we can do to combat it. The movement aims to unite students across the country in speaking up and taking action on climate change. Here at NU, students can kick off their weekend by listening to a number of speakers, eating free food, and participating in movement-building activities.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT NORRIS EAST LAWN FROM 6PM-9PM

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky

Speaking first will be Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a member of the House of Representatives from Illinois. Schakowsky has stated that “climate change is one of the greatest challenges we face, both for the United States and the world.” As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, she has supported legislation to reduce pollution and increase the use of clean energy. Schakowsky also supports global efforts to fight climate change, and acknowledges the need for great action on the issue.

Henry Henderson: Midwest Director of the National Resources Defense Council

Following Congresswoman Schakowsky, Henderson will speak about limiting our impact on the environment. Growing up around steel plants in Granite City, Illinois, Henderson has seen firsthand the effects of pollution. The NRDC is group of over 500 scientists, lawyers and other professionals and has been credited as one of the most effective climate change action groups. At the NRDC, Henderson has worked to change public policy to improve the health, safety and sustainability of communities throughout the Midwest.

Slam Poet Keith "Blu" Warfield

Known for his poetry on social issues, Chicago-born and -based slam poet Blu Warfield will be performing on social justice and activism. He works with Young Chicago Authors, which aims to “[transform] the lives of young people by cultivating their voices through writing, publication, and performance education.”

NU Chemistry Professor Dick Co

Known for his research in developing materials to more efficiently convert solar energy into chemical energy, Professor Co will be speaking on sustainability and clean energy.

NU Student Speakers

NU student Major Zeng, from Beijing, and Forrest Bruce, a student from the Native American Indigenous Student Association, will be speaking about the intersections of their identities with climate change and environmental justice.

Activities

Other activities at Know Tomorrow include volleyball (complete with a large blow up globe) and a movement building workshop, where attendees will make banners that draw attention to climate change.
